MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Freshman
Mia Sanchez went 3-for-5 on the day to lead the Colonel offense, as the Eastern Kentucky University softball team lost to the University of Illinois Chicago and Lipscomb on the second day of the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic.
Eastern (0-4, 0-0 Ohio Valley Conference) dropped the first game to UIC, 2-1, in extra innings. The teams held each other in check until the top of the eighth.
After a Sanchez single, sophomore
Hannah Clark sent a grounder to second base, allowing
Amber Murray to cross the plate for the Colonels and go up 1-0.
However, UIC plated two runs in the home half of the inning to seal the win.
In game two, Lipscomb took an early 4-0 lead but the Colonels answered with two runs in the top of the third to trim the lead. Eastern took advantage of two Lipscomb miscues as Murray scored on a throwing error before Sanchez rounded the bags on a mishandled ball.
The Bison plated four runs of their own in the third and fourth to extend their lead to 12-2. However, the Colonels' offense found its rhythm in the final two innings, combining for five late runs.
In the fifth, an RBI groundout from Minogue gave the Colonels their first run of the inning, before
Johnkyria Alston drove a two RBI double to center to score Sanchez and
Krislyn Campos.
In the final frame, it was Minogue's two RBI double to center that helped cut into the Lipscomb lead. However, the Bison lead was too much and Lipscomb added three insurance runs in the home half for the win.
The Colonels close out the event against Monmouth University Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
