RICHMOND, Ky. – The men's tennis team improved to 4-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 6-1 victory over Tennessee State on Saturday at the Tom Higgins Tennis Courts.
The Colonels (15-7) lost the doubles point but rolled to a sweep of the singles matches, winning five of them in straight sets.
Jan Kuehling's 6-3 and 6-4 win over Tom Parant at No. 3 singles got Eastern within one point of claiming the match.
Diego Asis clinched it with a 6-3 and 7-5 win at No. 5 singles over Kyle Burton. Burton came into the match unbeaten this spring at 7-0.
"Good bounce back for the men in singles," Eastern Kentucky Head Coach
Rob Oertel said. "Asis' win was big. Burton is feared by a lot of programs. He's good. Great win for Diego. Coach Walker is doing a fabulous job at TSU. They are the most improved team in the conference."
Ramon van Flymen,
Sebastian Mueller,
Parth Aggarwal and
Guillem Sanchis also picked up singles wins. Sanchis played his first match since Feb. 12. The 2016 All-OVC performer has been out of action with an injury.
"Guillem's return is a huge injection of confidence for our program to have such a quality player back in the line-up," Oertel said. "It will be a huge source of confidence for us running through the next two weekends to the OVC Tournament Championship. He's a huge source of positive energy for our program."
EKU closes out OVC play on Friday at Austin Peay and then will play at Purdue on Sunday, April 16.
