RICHMOND, Ky. – On Senior Day, it was senior
Bailly Bounds' free kick goal in the 60
th minute that sent the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Tennessee Tech Sunday afternoon.
After Rachel Blow scored directly off a corner kick to give TTU (6-7-2, 2-4-2 OVC) a 1-0 advantage in the 19
th minute, Bounds responded for the Colonels 15 minutes into the second half, burying a free kick into the upper left corner of the net to equalize it.
It was Bounds' third goal of the year and ninth of her career.
EKU (7-6-3, 3-2-3 OVC) proved dangerous throughout the second half, but could not convert a winning goal. The Colonels outshot the Golden Eagles, 21-8, on the day and 10-2 in the second half.
"Today was one of those games that we feel we deserved a better result, but we couldn't have asked the girls to work any harder than they did," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "We're extremely proud of how they were relentless in the attack and kept working to get the winning goal. Our defense stayed connected and worked very well together. We were, unfortunately, not able to score in a couple of situations, but this was a great effort to give for our seniors."
Senior
Monica Rios paced the Colonels with five shots in the game, two of which were on target.
Defenders
Kacy Eckley,
Katie Shaffer and
Jess Philpot played all 110 minutes of the rainy, double-overtime affair.
Freshman keeper
Zoe Aguirre went the distance in goal and made one save to help preserve the draw.
EKU now hits the road to face UT Martin (October 19) and Murray State (October 21) to close out the regular season next weekend.
