AKRON, Ohio – Eastern Kentucky out-shot and out-rebounded Akron, but committed 22 turnovers and were out-scored by 14 at the free throw line in a 63-54 loss on Saturday.

The Colonels (0-7) hit on 33 percent of their shots from the field while holding Akron to 29 percent shooting for the game. EKU out-rebounded the home team by eight, 47-39. However, the Zips connected on 22-of-32 trips to the free throw line while Eastern made 8-of-8 at the stripe.

After playing six straight games away from home, EKU will host Kentucky Christian University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Shay Solomon led Eastern with 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting against Akron. She also grabbed eight rebounds.Â

Catie Kaifes finished with nine points and a game-best 12 rebounds.

Megan Sefcik led all players with 26 points for the Zips (4-1), finishing 10-for-10 at the free throw line.

In the final three minutes of the third quarter, the Colonels closed an 11-point deficit, 47-36, to just two points. Bass got the 10-1 run going with a three-pointer. Solomon and Kaifes made back-to-back lay-ups to get within five, 48-43. Bass hit another three-pointer at the buzzer to send the visitors to the fourth down 48-46.

Eastern completed the comeback from 11 down when
Hailey McCoy scored the first two points of the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws at the 8:19 mark to knot the game, 48-48. Akron scored the next seven points to seize control of the contest. EKU never got closer than five the rest of the way.
