NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A late 8-2 run allowed Eastern Kentucky's women's basketball team to tie the game and force overtime, but Tennessee State escaped with a 69-58 victory on Saturday.
With the game tied early in the fourth quarter, TSU used an 8-2 run, keyed by four points from Maxine Beard, to go in front by six, 51-45, with 4:45 left in the period. However, the Lady Tigers scored just two more points the rest of the quarter and Eastern used an 8-2 run to tie it.
Two free throws by A'Queen Hayes with 1:03 left in regulation made it 53-53. Tennessee State turned the ball over in the final five seconds. Hayes got of a shot just inside the half court line as the horn sounded, but it missed.
Beard's three-pointer with 1:47 left in the extra period gave TSU a six point lead and put the game away.
Hayes had a team-best 21 points to go along with eight rebounds. Bria Bass finished with 16 points and six boards. Taylor Roberts had 23 points for Tennessee State. Beard and Tia Wooten scored 19 each for the home team.
Tennessee State scored the first six points of the game, but Eastern answered by scoring eight straight to key a 19-5 run that turned that six-point deficit into an eight-point lead early in the second quarter. TSU went nearly six minutes without scoring. Five different Colonels scored to get the run started. Shay Solomon's jumper with 7:52 left in the second put the visitors in front 19-11.
The Lady Tigers battle back to within two on a pair of free throws from Wooten with 2:57 to go in the second quarter. EKU led by five, 31-26, at the break.
Tennessee State used a 14-5 run in the third quarter to turn a five-point deficit into a two-point lead. Bass tied the game when she hit 1-of-2 at the free throw line with 9:16 on the clock in the fourth.
The Colonels will play their final home game of the 2017-18 season on Thursday when Southeast Missouri State University visits McBrayer Arena. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
