RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team battled visiting Eastern Illinois to a double-overtime, scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon.
It was the third shutout of the season for freshman goalkeeper
Zoe Aguirre and the EKU defense. Aguirre made four saves in the game, while senior
Kacy Eckley and sophomore
Katie Shaffer played all 110 minutes on the backline.
"We have to give Eastern Illinois a lot credit," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "They are much improved from last year and defended very well today, frustrating us throughout the game. I thought we dominated large stretches of possession, but we have to create more chances than we did."
Shot attempts were fairly even on the day, as EKU (4-5-1, 0-1-1 OVC) fired 12 and EIU (2-4-3, 1-0-1 OVC) fired 13.
The Colonels attempted seven corner kicks to the Panthers' one.
Senior
Idalys Rea led EKU with four shots. Seniors
Bailly Bounds and
Monica Rios both put shots on frame for the Colonels.
"The past few weeks have been rough for us, but the girls responded well today with a better defensive effort," Flohre added. "We can never complain about shutting out our opponent. We just have to get back to being better on the attacking half of the field."
EKU returns to action next Sunday, September 23, when the Colonels host in-state rival Morehead State.
