RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky women's basketball team took a quick seven-point lead early in the first quarter, but a 9-0 run to close the third quarter propelled Austin Peay to an 80-60 win Thursday at McBrayer Arena.

Bria Bass broke an early 2-2 tie with a jumper that began a 9-2 EKU run that turned into an 11-4 advantage after
Teri Goodlett nailed a three-pointer with 5:45 left in the first quarter.Â

APSU led by one at the end of the first but the Colonels scored four of the first five to start the second quarter. Eastern led by as many as five in the second and went into the locker room in front 36-35.

After
Catie Kaifes' jumper pushed the Colonels to a 51-50 lead with 3:27 left in the third, the Governor's scored the final nine points of the quarter, fueled by Ariella Gonzalez-Varner. She hit a three-pointer and a lay-up during the spurt.

Austin Peay used a big fourth quarter to pull ahead, outscoring the Colonels 21-9 to close out the game.

Abby Wright scored a team-high 16 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had two assists.
Shay Solomon contributed 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Gonzalez-Varner added 20 points to the Governor's scoreboard to go along with nine rebounds.

Both Eastern and Austin Peay shot 43 percent from the field. The Governors out-scored the Colonels 18-11 in second chance points and 17-6 off turnovers.

The Colonels fall to 2-26 (0-17 OVC), while the Governors go to 15-13 (10-7, OVC).

EKU's season will conclude at home on Saturday against in-state rival Morehead State. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
