RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University's men's basketball program was picked to finish second in the ASUN Conference this season in two preseason polls conducted by league head coaches and media representatives.

Guards Braxton Beverly and Jomaru Brown were chosen to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference Team by the league coaches.  Eastern Kentucky was the only team to place two players on the 10-player preseason all-conference team.

In voting by fans, EKU's Cooper Robb was chosen as the ASUN Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Michael Moreno was voted ASUN Preseason Player of the Year.

Liberty was picked to win the ASUN Conference in both polls.

In the coaches' poll, EKU received one first-place vote and a total of 126 points.  Liberty had nine first-place votes and 141 points.  Jacksonville State was third with 103 points.  Bellarmine (1) and North Florida (1) also received first-place votes from the head coaches.  Bellarmine (97) was fourth and Lipscomb (89) rounded out the top five teams.

In the preseason media poll, Eastern Kentucky was chosen first on two ballots and totaled 288 points.  Liberty (30) received the remaining first-place votes and 376 points.  Bellarmine (284) and Lipscomb (284) tied for third and Jacksonville State (240) was fifth.

Beverly, a 5-foot-10 senior from Vicco, Kentucky, joined the EKU program this summer after playing four seasons at North Carolina State.  He finished his Wolfpack career tied for fourth in program history in career 3-pointers (218) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.39).  He scored his 1,000th career point against Syracuse in the 2021 ACC Tournament, becoming only the 54th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club.  He is one of only two players in N.C. State history with more than 1,000 career points, 300 career assists, 200 career 3-pointers and 100 career steals.  In 2020-21, Beverly averaged seven points, 2.6 assists, 1.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Brown, a 6-foot-2 junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, played in four games last year before suffering a season-ending injury.  He averaged 12 points and two steals per game while shooting 44 percent from the field.  As a sophomore in 2019-20, Brown earned first team all-conference honors after ranking fourth in scoring at 18.4 points per game.  His 18.4 points per game ranked 12th among all sophomores in the country.  Brown also ranked third in the league in steals per game (1.9).  He poured in a career-high 41 points versus in-state rival Western Kentucky on Nov. 15, 2019.

Robb, a 6-foot-1 junior guard from Georgetown, Kentucky, led the team in steals last season with 1.83 per game.  He ranked fifth in the conference and 64th in the nation.  Robb had a season-best eight steals against High Point.  Moreno, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward from Georgetown, averaged 10.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game in 2020-21.  He ranked second in the conference in 3-point shooting (45.7 percent).

EKU posted a 22-7 record in 2020-21.  Head coach A.W. Hamilton's squad was ranked as high as No. 12 in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 and concluded the season ranked 25th.

The Colonels finished eighth in the nation in scoring offense at 82 points per game.  Eastern Kentucky also set a new program record for 3-pointers in a game (20) and led the nations in steals (10.3 per game) a year ago.  EKU ranked second in the country in turnovers forced per game, second in turnover margin, second in tempo/pace and 10th in 3-pointers made.

National expectations are high for the 2021-22 Colonels.  Eastern Kentucky was picked to win the ASUN Conference by College Sports Madness and predicted to earn a No. 14 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament by CBS Sports.  College Sports Madness picked EKU as the No. 1 team in the ASUN and No. 88 overall in the nation.
