LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team staged a furious second-half comeback, but eventually fell to SIUE, 3-2, in a wild season opener on Tuesday afternoon at the Louisville City Training Grounds.
EKU (0-1) fell behind early. SIUE's Taylor Dolt scored off an assist from Kayla Klipsch late in the first half. Five minutes into the second half, the Cougars struck again, as Mackenzie Litzsinger took a pass from Lily Schneiders and put it in the back of the net to go up 2-0.
The Colonels' response was swift. In the 51
st minute, freshman
Kylie Fitzgerald claimed her first career goal in her first collegiate game, scoring off an assist from sophomore
Maddy Lemery to cut the SIUE lead in half.
Less than a minute later, senior all-conference defender
Katie Shaffer scored off another assist from Lemery to tie it up. It was Shaffer's second career goal.
SIUE (1-0) got the game-winner in the 73
rd minute, when Klipsch scored off a pass from Ashlin West.
Sophomore
Audrey Anderson led the Colonels with three shots on the day. She had a goal called back for offsides in the first half.

Taran McMillan added two shots apiece for the Colonels. EKU attempted 12 shots in the game, six of which were on target.
