EKU Softball Pushes Winning Streak To Seven Games With Second Straight Conference Sweep

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team pushed its winning streak to seven games with its second straight conference sweep with a 5-0 win over Tennessee State on Monday afternoon.

Eastern Kentucky (25-9, 16-4 OVC) struck first in the bottom of the third inning and that was all pitcher Tori Peterson needed in the circle.

Jaelyn Sanders started the scoring for the Colonels in the bottom of the third after taking a 1-0 pitch over the right center field fence for her fifth home run of the season to give EKU the 1-0 advantage.

The Colonels added some insurance in the bottom of the fourth.

Mattira Morales got things started with a pinch hit double down the right field line to put a runner on second with no one out. Lou Bowers followed with a single up the middle to bring home Vianna Barron and the Colonels took a 2-0 lead. Miranda Lopez singled down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw to put runners on second and third with one out in the inning. Sammi Miller delivered with a line drive right back up the middle off the pitcher's glove to score another run and Eastern took a 3-0 lead after four innings.

The Colonels added two more in the bottom of the sixth after a RBI double by Miller and a RBI single by Ariyana Miranda.

Tennessee State (8-22, 4-18 OVC) only managed four hits on the contest.

Peterson (13-2) started in the circle tossing a complete game shutout, with one strikeout and zero walks. Peterson threw 78 pitches in the game.

Miller went 3-for-4 with one double and two RBIs. Bowers went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Eastern looks to extend its seven-game winning streak when the Colonels welcome in-state rival and nationally ranked Kentucky to Gertrude Hood Field on Wednesday. First-pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
