EKU Women's Golf Has Record-Breaking Performance At Redbird Invitational

RICHMOND, Ky. –
On its way to winning the Redbird Invitational by nine shots, the Eastern Kentucky women's golf team set a number of new program records.
 
EKU's first round score of 283 on Sunday broke the previous program single round mark of 284 which was accomplished twice (2011-12 and 2015-16).  The Colonels' total score of 861 broke the previous 54-hole program record of 867 set during the 2015-16 season. 
 
In addition, Eastern Kentucky's first round 283 was a tournament record for the Redbird Invitational, breaking the previous record of 288 by Northern Illinois in 2018 and Southern Illinois in 2019.  EKU's final total also established a new tournament record.
 
Three Colonels finished in the top four.
 
EKU followed its first round 5-under with a second round 1-over 289 on Sunday.  Eastern Kentucky closed out play on Monday with another 1-over round of 289 for a total of 861. 
 
The Colonels were nine strokes better than second place IUPUI (870).  Northern Illinois (887) was a distant third, 26 shots behind EKU.  The 16-team field included a number of schools from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) – Northern Illinois, Ball State, Bowling Green and Ohio – and several from the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) – Bradley, Drake, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Loyola and Valparaiso.
 
Ragnhildur Kristinsdottir led EKU and finished second overall with a three-round total of 210 (-6), just one shot from tying the program record of 209.  Kristinsdottir shot back-to-back rounds of 3-under 69 before wrapping up with an even-par 72.  She finished two shots off the lead.
 
Elisa Orduna Shackleton and Rylea Marcum both shot rounds of 68 during the tournament, which is the third best score in program history.  Shackleton concluded play on Monday with a 4-under 68.  She shot rounds of 70 (-2) and 74 (+2) on Sunday.  The junior finished third with a total of 212 (-4).  Shackleton had two birdies on the front nine and two more on the back to mix with 14 pars on Monday. 
 
Marcum's 68 came in the first round.  She followed up with a 1-over 73 and a 2-over 74 for a total of 215 (-1).  She tied for fourth overall.
 
Vilma Efraimsson (224) tied for 19th and Carlee Shoemaker (231) tied for 52nd.  Playing as an individual, Maddie Hensley (226) tied for 25th overall.
 
The two-day, 54-hole event was contested on the par 72, 6,022-yard course at Weibring Golf Club.
 
EKU will be back in action at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee at Cherokee Country Club on Sept. 20-21.
