RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team signed
Ambah Kowcun (Pronounced AM-buhh, CAL-can), a graduate guard from Wichita State to its 2024-25 roster, announced by head coach
Greg Todd on Monday afternoon.
Kowcun is the third signee out of the transfer portal this offseason for the Colonels. Standing 5-foot-11, she is expected to be a stretch four on the 2024-25 roster.
"We are really excited to add Ambah to the team, her versatility is a huge addition to our program," said Todd. "She brings a wealth of experience and is a knockdown shooter that can perform on all areas of the floor. I'm super excited to get Ambah on campus as we prepare for another challenging season of Atlantic Sun Conference play."
An Adelaide, Australia native, Kowcun joins EKU after two seasons with Wichita State where she played in 45 games and appeared in the 2023 Women's National Invitational Tournament.
Last season with the Shockers, Kowcun logged 170 minutes of action and averaged 2.0 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. She had a season-high 11 points at UAB going 3-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-4 from deep.
In 2022-23, Kowcun helped Wichita State advance to the WNIT and totaled a NCAA career-best 4.6 points per game. She had six games scoring in double-figures, including a career-high 22 points in a win over Cincinnati and 14 points against South Carolina State. Kowcun ended the season shooting 41 percent from the floor and 37 percent from beyond the arch.
Prior to WSU, Kowcun appeared in 31 games for North Dakota College of Science (JC) where she averaged 19.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. She shot 42 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the free throw line where she was No. 3 nationally in several offensive categories.
Kowcun had 29 games in double-figure scoring, 20 of those ending with 20 or more points. She had a NJCAA-best 37 points behind 10 made threes against Lake Region State College on March 18, 2021.
She departed NDSCS as a two-time All-American, First Team All-Mon-Dak Conference, and First Team All-Region XIII. Kowcun still holds the record for career three-pointers (95) at her junior college.
In Australia, Kowcun spent her youth playing for the Uni Rebels Basketball Club near her hometown, the organization has sent several players to America for collegiate basketball and a few to the professional ranks in Australia. She is scheduled to report to campus this Summer to begin camp in preparation for the 2024-25 season.
As of Monday, June 3, EKU's current roster stands at 12 student-athletes for the upcoming season consisting of seven newcomers and five returners. Kowcun's addition marks the 17th transfer to commit to EKU under Todd.
EKU is coming off its first 20-win season since 2005 and first national postseason tournament appearance (WNIT) since 2013. The Colonels advanced to the Atlantic Sun Conference semifinals and had two student-athletes named all-conference.
