CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team opens Atlantic Sun Conference play on the road against Austin Peay on Thursday and Lipscomb on Saturday. The road trip marks year four for EKU as a member institution in the league.
Thursday's battle against long-time rival APSU will tipoff at 7 p.m. ET and Saturday's game at Lipscomb will begin at 3 p.m. Both games can be streamed live on ESPN+ or heard over the airwaves on 92.5 WEKY.
EKU (10-3) enters the ASUN Conference slate winners of its last nine games since Nov. 14 and are averaging 83.7 points per game in the stretch. The Colonels' win streak is the longest since the 2004-05 season.
In the team's high-scoring offensive output, senior guard
Kaitlyn Costner (13.6 ppg) and
Alice Recanati (12.4 ppg) are atop the charge with career-best totals and have led EKU in scoring in 8-of-13 games this season. Recanati had a season-high 22 points last time out in a comeback win over Samford to end the non-conference slate.
Freshman guard
Liz Freihofer is also on a hot streak lately averaging 10.6 points per game and will enter this week's conference opener as the reigning ASUN Freshman of the Week. She's a six-time conference weekly award recipient this year and has scored in double figures in five of her last six games.
Down low, EKU has had big production from its forwards in senior
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor and sophomore
Kailani Lindsey. In the Colonels' last three wins, the duo has combined for 60 points, 48 rebounds, and have dropped two double-doubles.
Scouting Austin Peay
The Govs enter sit with a 5-6 overall record entering play on Thursday and have won their last two games against High Point and UT Southern. Despite the two-game win streak, APSU is allowing its opponents to score 67.5 points per game on the season and have allowed over 70 points in three of the last four games. Freshman forward Sa'Mya Wyatt leads the Govs with 12.5 PPG and has ended in double figures in her last nine games.
History vs. Austin Peay
Thursday's conference opener marks the 91st meeting between EKU and APSU dating back to 1974. The Colonels lead the head-to-head series 49-41 overall, however, have lost their last 10 matchups to Austin Peay since 2017 and are looking for their first win over the Govs as members of the ASUN Conference.
Scouting Lipscomb
Lipscomb (7-4) will host North Florida on Thursday before the Colonels come to town over the weekend. The Bisons have lost three of their last four non-conference games to Chattanooga, Evansville, and Missouri – however, are 6-1 at Allen Arena this season. Preseason All-ASUN selection Bella Vinson leads Lipscomb with 12.4 PPG and is second on the team with 49 rebounds.
History vs. Lipscomb
Saturday's game in Nashville marks the 10th meeting between the Colonels and Bisons since 2000 and seventh meeting as conference foes. EKU leads the all-time series 6-3 and tied the record at 3-3 since joining the conference in 2021 with a 99-68 win over Lipscomb on the road last season in the ASUN Tournament semifinals.
