EKU (17-9, 7-6 ASUN) secured its third consecutive winning season under fourth year head coach
Greg Todd with a 75-62 win at Queens on Wednesday in Charlotte. The Colonels enter this weekend's contest winners in three of their last four games, only suffering a three-point loss to the ASUN's No. 1-ranked FGCU in the span.
As of Friday afternoon, EKU is tied for fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference women's basketball standings with five games left in the regular season. Entering the weekend, four slots in the 10-team ASUN Conference Tournament field have been locked up by FGCU, Central Arkansas, Lipscomb, and Stetson. If the tournament started today, EKU, North Alabama, Jacksonville, Bellarmine, Austin Peay, and West Georgia would round out the rest of the field.
Last game, freshman guard
Liz Freihofer led the Colonels with 22 points and nine rebounds—her third outing with 20 or more points and 15th time ending in double figures. Since cracking the starting lineup on Jan. 11, the Union, Kentucky native is averaging 13.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.2 made threes per game.
Continuing her hot streak, fifth year guard
Alice Recanati is second on the team averaging a career-high 12.4 points per game. The Italian is eight-points shy of 1,500 in a record-breaking career where she has set school milestones in assists (648), minutes (4,826), games played (147), and games started (144). She is also top 10 in school history in points (1,492), field goals made (525), free throws made (329), and steals (221). Entering the weekend, Recanati is first in the ASUN Conference and top 55 nationally with 111 assists this season, she is second in the league in assists per game (4.3) and free throw percentage (84.3).
Additionally, senior guard
Kaitlyn Costner leads EKU with 12.9 points per game and has scored double figures in 11 of her last 13 games. Costner has scored 10 or more points in all but two conference games this year with a conference-high 16 points in two games against Austin Peay and Jacksonville.
Scouting Bellarmine
Bellarmine (15-11, 6-7 ASUN) eclipsed its most wins as a NCAA DI member defeating Lipscomb, 86-79, in overtime last night in Nashville. However, the Knights had lost their last three games prior to Thursday's win against Jacksonville, FGCU, and Stetson—two of those games coming by slim margins. On the year, graduate guard Hayley Harrison leads the club with 15.5 points per game and has scored double figures in her last six games.
History vs. Bellarmine
Saturday's game in Louisville marks the 15th meeting between EKU and Bellarmine since 1975. The Colonels lead the head-to-head series 11-3 overall and 6-1 as members of the ASUN Conference. Saturday's game will look a little different being played inside BU's on-campus 2,000-seat arena, Knights Hall, rather than being played inside Freedom Hall which seats over 18,000 near the exposition center.
EKU hasn't played inside Knights Hall since 1986 and enter the contest with a 3-1 record in the venue with wins in 1975, 1980, and 1984. The Colonels hold a 5-2 record over Bellarmine in road games.
