JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior forward
Joseana Vaz of Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Monday's honors are the third conference weekly award of Vaz's season and career. She has been named the ASUN Newcomer of the Week twice this season, having claimed honors earlier this year on Nov. 24.
Vaz helped EKU open conference play with a 2-0 record, averaging 15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game in home wins over West Georgia and Queen. She finished one rebound shy of recording double-doubles in both contests.
In the conference opener against West Georgia, Vaz posted 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. She followed with her fourth career double-double in a 103-49 victory over Queens, scoring 17 points with 10 rebounds while shooting 6-of-11 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
A native of Cape Verde, Vaz ranks second on the team in both scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 13.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures 11 times and recorded two 20-point performances.
EKU (11-4, 2-0 ASUN) returns to action Thursday night at North Alabama. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and can be heard for free on the Colonels All-Access page.
