RICHMOND, Ky. – Raise the banner in Richmond! The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team capped its historic regular season with a 100-43 victory over Bellarmine on Friday night inside Baptist Health Arena.
With the win, EKU finishes the regular season 24-7 overall and 15-3 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, tying the program record for single-season victories and securing a conference regular season championship for the first time since 2005.
The Colonels enter next week's ASUN Tournament in Jacksonville, Florida as the No. 1 overall seed and advance straight to the quarterfinals on March 5 to face the winner of the No. 8/9 game.
The victory also marked head coach
Greg Todd's 100th win at EKU in just five seasons. Todd becomes the winningest coach in program history and has guided the Colonels to three consecutive 20-win seasons, a first in school history.
EKU placed six players in double figures in the 57-point win.
Sophomore guard
Liz Freihofer led the way with 18 points, shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range. With her five triples, Freihofer, a Union, Kentucky, native, moved into eighth place in program history with 138 career 3-pointers.
Junior guard
Madison Lewis followed with a season-high 16 points. Senior guard
Althea Kara Angeles added 13 points, while fellow junior guard
Love Mays contributed 10.
Sophomore forward
Kailani Lindsey made her first collegiate start and posted her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Lindsey has totaled 26 points and 24 rebounds over her last two games entering postseason play.
As a team, EKU shot 43 percent (35-for-82) from the floor, knocked down 14 3-pointers and pulled down a season-high 60 rebounds, including 31 offensive boards.
Bellarmine, which finishes 2-29 overall and 0-18 in league play, was led by Kayce Hyman with 19 points.
EKU built momentum early behind perimeter shooting and dominance on the offensive glass. Freihofer hit two 3-pointers in the opening quarter as the Colonels forced six turnovers and took a nine-point lead after 10 minutes.
The Colonels broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Bellarmine 25-9 to take a 45-20 lead at halftime. Angeles hit two 3-pointers during the run, while Lewis and
Kenleigh Woods added baskets as EKU capitalized on transition opportunities.
The offensive surge continued in the third. EKU poured in 31 points in the quarter to extend its lead to 76-39 entering the fourth. Freihofer connected on two more 3-pointers, while Angeles,
Joseana Vaz and Lewis each scored during the decisive stretch.
EKU held Bellarmine to just four points in the final quarter. Woods converted a three-point play, Lewis added a late basket and
Jasmine Jordan knocked down a 3-pointer in the final minute to push the Colonels to the century mark and secure the 100-43 final.
EKU will face the winner of the No. 8/9 game in the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals on March 5 at noon ET. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
