HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Eastern Kentucky University beach volleyball team's season came to an end Thursday afternoon after a quarterfinal loss to Jacksonville in the ASUN Championship, following a victory over Central Arkansas earlier in the day.
The Colonels opened the day by earning their second ASUN Tournament victory in program history with a 3-0 sweep of Central Arkansas.
Gabriella Armitage and
Elpida Pitsigkoni secured the first point for EKU, defeating the Bears 21-8, 21-16. The win marked Pitsigkoni's 20th victory of the season, tying the program record for most individual wins in a single season.
Molly Shomock and
Riley Cutler gave the Colonels their second point after a battle at the No. 1 flight. Both sets extended past 21 points before EKU prevailed 23-21, 23-21.
Amanda Floystad and
Carlyn Mcallister clinched the sweep for the Colonels with a three-set victory, 24-22, 17-21, 15-9.
In the second match of the day, Jacksonville took a 1-0 lead with a win at the No. 1 flight. At No. 2, Armitage and Pitsigkoni claimed the opening set 21-18 but were unable to finish the comeback. The Dolphins closed out the dual with straight-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 flights to end EKU's season.
Despite the result, the Colonels capped a historic season. EKU set a program record with 18 wins, earned its second ASUN Tournament victory, tied the program record for individual wins in a season, and produced the program's second all-conference honoree.
The Colonels have plenty to look forward to with a young roster after securing their fourth consecutive winning season.
