Lady Colonels To Face Tennessee Tech On The Road

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky will travel to Cookeville, Tenn., for a game against Tennessee Tech on Saturday. The two teams will tip-off at 4 p.m. (ET). EKU (10-7, 5-5 OVC) is coming off a road loss to Tennessee State. The Golden Eagles (4-18, 3-9 OVC) snapped a five-game losing streak on Thursday by beating Tennessee-Martin on the road.

Tennessee Tech leads the all-time series 53-19. The Lady Colonels snapped a five-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles on Jan. 5 with a 74-62 win in Richmond. Over the last 13 games in the series, Eastern holds a slim 7-6 advantage.

EKU has shot 52 percent or better in each of its last three games.

In their last game, despite shooting 54.4 percent from the field the Lady Colonels lost 104-85 to Tennessee State on Jan. 24 in Nashville, Tenn. The Lady Tigers shot 61.4 percent and forced 25 turnovers. Crystal Jones led EKU with 22 points.

TSU’s trio of Kendra Appling, Tiffany Jackson and Obiageli Okafor combined for 83 points and 21 rebounds. Appling led the way with 39 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Jackson added 26 points and six boards. Okafor finished with 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Ashley Cazee added 21 points, eight assists, four rebounds and four steals for the Lady Colonels. Niki Avery finished with 17 points.

Tennessee State shot 60 percent (18-of-30) in the first half and led by seven at the break, 48-41. Eastern Kentucky made 53.1 percent (17-of-32) of its first half shots. Jones had 17 points in the first half, but did not score again until 6:47 remained in the game.

After a lay-up 32 seconds into the second half drew EKU to within five, the Lady Tigers went on a 10-0 run to build a 15-point lead, 60-45, with 17:14 left in the game.

The Lady Colonels put together a 9-2 run to get back within single digits. However, at the other end, Appling connected on a pair of free throws and TSU led by double digits the rest of the game.

Tennessee State finished the game 27-of-35 from the free throw line for 77.1 percent. At 59.1 percent, the Lady Tigers entered the game with the lowest free throw percentage in the conference.

The last EKU opponent to reach the century mark was Eastern Illinois on Jan. 27, 2000. The Panthers defeated the Lady Colonels 102-95 in overtime.

Tennessee State out-rebounded Eastern 35-22 and finished with 17 offensive boards.

Since hitting just four of 22 three-point shots (18.2 percent) against Morehead State on Jan. 10, the Lady Colonels have made 42 of 80 shots from beyond the three-point arc for 52.5 percent in their last four games.

In her last seven games, Niki Avery has made 32 three-pointers. That’s an average of 4.6 treys per game. During that span she has attempted 69 three-pointers and is shooting 46.3 percent from deep. Avery made 7 of 10 attempts from three-point land on against Samford on Jan. 19. That moved the senior past former Lady Colonel and current EKU assistant coach Lisa Pace into fifth place on EKU’s all-time three-pointers made list.

Tennessee Tech snapped its five-game losing streak with a 73-64 win over UT Martin. TTU is 2-7 in its last nine games.

Against UTM, center Kristina Tyler led Tech with 21 points and nine rebounds. She also had three assists, a block and a steal while connecting on eight of 14 shots from the field. Blair Bowens added 16 points and Marissa Hensley chipped in with 12 points.

The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from the field and made 11 of 23 three-pointers (47.8 percent). Hensley went 4-for-4 from deep and Bowens was 4-for-7 from long range.

Tyler leads the team in scoring (16.2 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg). She ranks seventh and eighth respectively in the OVC in those same categories. The 6-foot-1 senior has made 49.2 percent of her shots from the field this season and 84.4 percent from the free throw line.

Junior guard Meagan Lyons is second on the team with an average of 8.8 points per contest. She leads the squad with 41 steals, has the second most assists and third highest rebounding average (3.6 rpg).

As a team, Tennessee Tech only averages 59.2 points per game. The Golden Eagles have been held to under 60 points in 11 games, including three of their last four. TTU scored a season low 39 points on Jan. 19 at home against Southeast Missouri.
