RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with Morehead State on Tuesday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Colonels (9-11, 1-3 OVC) won the first game 2-1 in extra innings on
Diane Gallagher’s walk-off solo home run. The Eagles (13-7, 2-3 OVC) picked up a 12-7 win in the second game.
In the first game, Morehead State had five base runners in the first two innings, but failed to score. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when the Colonels manufactured the game’s first run. With one out,
Kalyn Fox was hit by a pitch.
DeAnn Horswill followed with a sacrifice bunt. A misplayed fly ball by the Morehead State right fielder allowed Fox to score from second.
In the top of the seventh, Stacye Toups walked the first two batters.
Chelsea Butler came on to pitch and retired two straight batters before a single through the right side by Bethany Ellis scored the tying run. Butler struck out Courtney Seiler to get out of the inning with the go ahead run stranded at third base.
In the bottom of the seventh, the first three Colonels reached base on an infield hit and two errors. However, Alex Gjevre struck out the next batter and then got
Erin Luther to hit into a 5-2-3 double play to send the game into extra innings.
Gallagher, a freshman, hit her first career home run, a solo shot over the right field fence, in the bottom of the eighth to give the Colonels the win.
Butler (1-1) earned the win after pitching two innings of relief and giving up one hit. Freshman
Brittany Mockbee started and tossed four and two-thirds scoreless innings. She allowed three hits, walked four and struck out three. Gjevre (8-4) went the distance for the Eagles, allowing two runs, one walk and striking out nine.
Morehead State got off to a quick start in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning. Kayla Brill drove in a pair with a single to right field. Two batters later, a single through the left side by Seiler made it a 4-0 game.
The Eagles put up another four spot in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead. Three different hitters drove in a run and MSU platted another on an EKU error.
Shyenne Hussey’s single up the middle scored
Jena Handley and got the Colonels on the board in the bottom of the inning. A sacrifice fly by Fox and a RBI double by
Ashley Dollins in the same inning cut the deficit to 9-3.
Eastern didn’t quit. The Colonels platted four runs in the bottom of the sixth and brought the go ahead run to the plate. When
Cassi Gibson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Dollins scored to make it a 10-7 game, and the bases remained loaded with no outs. A double play and a strike out got the Eagles out of the inning without any more damage.
Rebecca Butler hit a two-run home run over the center field fence in the top of the seventh to set the final score at 12-7. Brill finished 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs for MSU. Bianca Cardenas and Seiler each had three hits.
Eight different Colonels registered at least one hit. Gallagher was the only one to finish with two hits.
The Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they host future Ohio Valley Conference member Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., at Gertrude Hood Field.
