KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After scoring more than four runs only once in its first 10 games of the season, Eastern Kentucky beat Sacred Heart 13-1 in six innings and Pennsylvania 10-2 in five innings today at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. In the two games combined, sophomore
Amber Lenz went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
In the first game against Sacred Heart, the Pioneers jumped on top with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Colonels took control with three runs each in the second and third innings. Freshman
Larkyn Wood drove in two with a single up the middle in the second.
Pam Webber and
Kalyn Fox each had RBI singles in the third.
A two-run single up the middle by Lenz highlighted a five-run sixth inning that turned an 8-1 lead into a 13-1 advantage. The game ended when SHU failed to score in the bottom of the inning.
Stacye Toups (4-3) pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Wood finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Fox went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs. Lenz was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the first game.
In the second game, Penn jumped on top early on Sarah Patrick’s two-run single in the top of the first. After back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the first inning, the momentum swung to the Colonels with one swing of the bat by
Shyenne Hussey. The junior drove a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence to put EKU in front 3-2. Eastern added two more later in the inning for a 5-2 lead.
The Colonels added three runs in the second and two in the third. The Quakers failed to score after the first inning and the game ended after five.
Diane Gallagher finished with three hits in three at bats with two runs scored for Eastern. Hussey went 2-for-2 with two runs and four RBIs. Lenz capped the day with a 2-for-2 performance with a run scored and an RBI.
Brittany Mockbee (1-2) started and pitched all five innings. The freshman allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five batters.
The Colonels will be off on Monday. They return to the field on Tuesday to face Butler at 9 a.m., and Robert Morris at 1 p.m., in Kissimmee.
