RICHMOND, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University track and field team will host the EKU Open on Friday at Tom Samuels Track on campus. Events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. and last until almost 10:00 p.m. More than 15 schools are expected to be represented at the meet.
Included in the participating schools are Kentucky, Tennessee, Marshall and conference foe Morhead State. Lindsey Wilson, Campbellsville, Centre and other state schools will also be in attendance.
The track and field Colonels feature some of the some of the top runners in the OVC in respective events.
On the men's side, senior Joseph Maina sits atop the OVC Best List in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:16.07. Junior Andre Evans, meanwhile, has recorded the best 110-meter hurdles time in the conference at 14.50.
Junior Stanley Mugo is second on the OVC Best List in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:14.31.
Sophomore Shannon Davis is third in the OVC in the 100 meters with a time of 10.47. The Atlanta native is ranked 17th in the country in the 200 meters; however, he has yet to compete in that race in 2009. His ranking is based on the 20.68 he ran as a freshman in 2008.
Three freshmen hold OVC best times for the women's team.
Freshman Diamond Benjamin took the top spot in the OVC in the 100 meters when she ran a 12.01 last weekend at the UT Sea Ray Relays.
Fellow freshman Lutisha Bowen is tied for the OVC lead in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.26.
Finally, freshman Katie Honigford holds the top spot in the conference in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.33.
Senior Katy Ankrom is second in the OVC in the 1,500 meters (4:31.37) and the 5,000 meters (17:51.41).
The meet is free to the general public.
