NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It wasn’t as easy as the scores might reflect, but the Eastern Kentucky softball team swept an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against Tennessee State on Saturday in Nashville. The Colonels (16-19, 7-8 OVC) won by scores of 7-2 and 4-3.
EKU trailed the Tigers (17-26, 7-12 OVC) 2-1 in the final inning of the first game before rallying with six runs in the seventh. Eastern trailed 3-1 in the fifth inning of game two before scoring twice to tie it and then won in 11 innings.
Senior
Kalyn Fox (6-1) earned the win in both games. She tossed five and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief in the first game while giving up two hits, walking three and striking out four. In the second game, Fox came on in relief and shutout TSU over the final six and one-third innings. She walked one batter and struck out three while allowing only three hits.
Trailing by one in the first game, the Colonels rallied in the final inning. The first three batters reached to load the bases.
Cassi Gibson’s single to left drove in the tying run.
Shyenne Hussey followed with a three-run double for a 5-2 EKU lead. Fox and
Jena Handley made it 7-2 with a pair of RBI singles.
After allowing a lead-off walk in the bottom half of the seventh, Fox recorded three straight outs to preserve the win. Gibson finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Hussey went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.
Down 3-1 in the second game, the Colonels rallied again.
Ashley Dollins doubled to left center to tie the game in the fifth. Then, neither team scored again for five innings.
In the top of the 11th, Fox was placed on second to begin the inning.
Amber Lenz’s sacrifice bunt moved Fox to third. She scored on
Erin Luther’s single to center. After scoring what proved to be the winning run, Fox struck out Jennifer Culberson with one out and the tying run on third. Bridget Metzger flied out to right to end the game.
Four Colonels finished with two hits. Gibson went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hussey scored once while going 2-for-5.
The Colonels and Tigers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
