RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University track and field athletes
Shannon Davis,
Andre Evans,
Evans Kiptoo,
Joseph Maina and
Stanley Mugo will compete at the Mideast Region Track and Field Championships this weekend hosted by the University of Louisville.
Davis, Maina and Mugo competed at the Mideast Region Championships last year in Fayetteville, Ark. For Evans and Kiptoo, this will be the inaugural trip.
Maina and Mugo were named All-Mideast Region in 2008 after Maina finished seventh in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:16.65 and Mugo placed eighth in the 3,000 meters steeplechase in 9:00.89.
Maina advanced to the NCAA National Championships where he qualified for the finals of the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:26.26 and then finished 15th in the finals with a time of 14:06.43.
While he was not named to the All-Mideast Region team, Davis also qualified for the national championships last year by placing 12th in the 200 meters at the Mideast Region Championships with a time of 20.85. He then finished 23rd at the national championships with a time of 21.25.
Davis will compete in the
200 meters and the 400 meters at the Mideast Region Championships this year. He entered the 2009 outdoor season ranked 16th in the country in the 200 meters before finishing second at the OVC Championships with a mark of 21.53.
The sophomore from Atlanta ran the 400 meters for the first time collegiately in April and then won the 400 meters at the OVC Championships with a time of 47.50.
Evans will compete in the
110-meter hurdles this weekend. The junior was the top 110-meter hurdler in the conference all season with a time of 14.50, and he solidified that spot by winning the OVC crown in the event with a time of 14.76.
Kiptoo and Maina will both compete in the
5,000 meters this weekend. Maina won the 5,000 meters at the OVC Championships in 2008 and went on to the aforementioned success in that event at the Mideast Region Championships; however, Kiptoo upset Maina in the 5,000 meters by just over a second this year at the OVC Championships with a time of 14:14.51.
The Kenyan duo sat well above the rest of the OVC in the 5,000 meters throughout the 2009 outdoor season.
Finally, Mugo, the reigning Co OVC Male Track Athlete of the Year, will run in the
3,000 meters steeplechase this weekend. Mugo ran an 8:52.07 in that event at the Penn Relays in April. The time was a personal best, one of the best times in EKU history and it ranked Mugo nationally for a short time.
The Nairobi, Kenya native then won the 3,000 meters steeplechase handily at the OVC Championships with a time of 9:11.84.
The meet, which will take place at the Cardinal Park Track and Field Complex, is set to get underway at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. The final event is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. on Saturday.
