BOX SCORE
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team remained undefeated and un-scored upon at home by defeating Cleveland State, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field. Senior
Lauren Imsande scored the game-winner early in the first half while fellow senior
Jessica Goshert sealed the deal with a goal in the second half.
“Our goal is to not lose a game at home,” Goshert said. “Today, the backline did a good job of getting forward into the attack. We’ve always been confident defensively, but now we’re starting to get more involved in the attack.”
Just seven minutes into the match, junior midfielder
Carly Muller dribbled to the right end line and crossed to Imsande, who kicked it in from about seven yards out.
It was Imsande’s second goal of the season (and second game-winner) and Muller’s first assist of the season.
“It was a total team effort today,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “Even though we scored early, we didn’t really find our rhythm in the first half. We made adjustments at halftime and to see it actually materialize on the field in the second half, it says a lot about these players’ coachability.”
In the 63rd minute, junior midfielder
Ashley Green crossed a corner kick and the 5’9 Goshert went up and got it, heading it past CSU keeper Kelly Zinkiewich to make it 2-0 and give the Colonels some breathing room.
“I don’t really care what happens to my body, so I just go,” Goshert said of the corner kick goal.
It was the second goal of Goshert’s career and both have been headers off corner kicks.
“We always look to her during corner kicks,” junior midfielder
Alex Raich said. “And she’s always hungry to go get them.”
Junior keeper
Stephanie Lynch played all 90 minutes of the match and made two saves while recording her second shutout in only three starts this season.
EKU outshot the Vikings on the day, 7-5.
The Colonels (2-3-0) return to action on Sunday when they host Winthrop at EKU Soccer Field at 1:00 p.m.
Despite the day’s positive outcome, the Colonels remain focused.
“We’re happy we won today,” Goshert said. “But we didn’t play a perfect game.”
Raich echoed Goshert’s sentiments.
“We have to come out each day, train harder and get better,” Raich said. “We can’t stop. Lindsay always says we’re only as good as our last training session.”
