RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday when the Colonels host in-state rival Morehead State at 1:00 p.m. at EKU Soccer Field. The game pits the first place Eagles (9-6-1, 6-0-1 OVC) against the second place Colonels (7-7-2, 4-3-0 OVC) in a matchup with major OVC Tournament seeding implications.

Morehead State clinched the OVC regular season title last weekend and will be the No. 1 seed in the OVC Tournament; however, the Eagles, amazingly, are the only team in the conference to have clinched a postseason berth heading into this final weekend. EKU can clinch a spot in the tournament with a win or a tie against Morehead State on Sunday. Then again, the Colonels could clinch on Friday based on other results from around the league. If that is the case, Sunday’s game for EKU will be about holding on to the No. 2 seed in the tournament and receiving an all-important first round bye.

“We are looking forward to playing at home coming off of our four-game road trip,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “This game holds a lot of importance in terms of where we will end up falling in the conference rankings, and it is also our Senior Day, so that comes with a little bit of emotion as well. The players understand the importance of this game and we’re just looking to control the things we are able to control and put ourselves in the best position we can to walk away with the result.”

The Colonels split last weekend, routing Jacksonville State, 5-0, on Friday night before falling to Austin Peay, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Janelle Coates scored a pair of goals while freshman Lauren Fant, who moved from the attack to the backline following a season-ending injury to junior Heather Bruce, recorded a career-high two assists in the Friday night romp.

Freshman Nicole Donnelly leads EKU with six goals on the season, three of which have been game-winners. Senior Carly Muller has also been key to the Colonel attack with three goals and one assist.

The EKU backline, led by junior center back Stephanie Murray, has surrendered only four goals in seven OVC games this season. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Lynch, meanwhile, has recorded five shutouts on the year, three against OVC competition.

That stout EKU defense, though, will face a formidable challenge against a Morehead State offense that, during conference play, leads the OVC in goals, assists, points and shots. Eagles’ striker Erin Adams has scored an OVC-best 11 goals this season.

The Morehead State defense is just as proficient. Led by goalkeeper Lily Meisner, the Eagles have allowed only one goal in seven OVC games.

The Colonels will look to deal the Eagles their first OVC regular season defeat since Oct. 19, 2008 on Sunday. This year’s senior class – Lynch, Muller, Courtney Nestor and Alex Raich – will be looking for their first-ever win against Morehead State. The closest EKU has come to beating Morehead State was last year when the Colonels played the Eagles to a scoreless draw at Jayne Stadium.

Senior Day activities will take place on the field before the game begins.

Following this weekend’s game, the Colonels will close out the regular season by hosting Longwood in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 3:00 p.m. at EKU Soccer Field.
