Gameweek: EKU Still in the Playoff Hunt Heading Into Final Weekend

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team concludes the 2011 regular season Saturday against OVC foe UT Martin. Fourteen seniors will be honored before the game which starts at 1 p.m.

A win by the Colonels (6-4, 5-2 OVC) would ensure at least a share of the Ohio Valley Conference title. However, EKU needs to win and have Tennessee Tech lose to Austin Peay to clinch the automatic OVC playoff bid. The Colonels last reached the NCAA FCS playoffs back in 2008.

UT Martin (5-5, 4-3) still has an outside shot at a share of the OVC title with a win and lots of help from other teams. In fact, it is still possible for the league to end in a six-way tie for first place.

The Skyhawks have lost three league games by a combined nine points. UTM is among the OVC leaders in scoring offense (second), total offense (second), total defense (second), rushing defense (second), and pass efficiency (first). Quarterback Derek Carr has thrown a league-high 23 touchdown passes compared to just eight interceptions.

UT Martin picked up its first-ever win over the Colonels last year, 10-7. The Skyhawks outgained Eastern, 223 to 77 yards, in the second half of that game. EKU had won the previous 20 meetings between the two teams including 2008 when the two teams played for the OVC title in the regular season finale with EKU prevailing thanks to a blocked field goal on the final play of the game, 33-31.
