Coles' Three-Pointer Gives EKU New Life, Wins In Overtime

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Junior Brittany Coles was 0-for-4 from the field when she knocked down a 26-foot three-pointer as time expired in regulation to send the game to overtime.  Eastern Kentucky scored the first six points of overtime in a 70-67 exhibition game victory against the University of the Cumberlands.

Coles had missed her first three three-point attempts when she gave the Lady Colonels new life.  Sophomore Marie Carpenter scored four of Eastern’s first six points in the extra period.  The home team hit just enough free throws, 2-of-4, in the final 20 seconds to secure the victory.

Carpenter finished with 15 points.  Coles totaled six.  Raechele Gray added nine points and seven assists in her first game as a Lady Colonel.

Jade Howard led the Cumberlands with 16 points.  Lauren Wombles added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Cumberlands took an early 3-2 lead before the Lady Colonels went on a 12-0 run.  Back-to-back three-pointers by Gray and Carpenter started the run.  Consecutive lay-ups by Jade Barber, Alex Jones and #LaRa`e Allen# finished it off.  Allen’s basket made it 14-3 in favor of the home team.

After the Patriots battled back within four, 23-19, on a lay-up by Wombles, EKU freshman Carla Booth came off the bench to spark another run.  She immediately came up with a steal and converted a pair of free throws at the other end.  The Martin County native then knocked down a long jumper from the left corner.  After two free throws by Barber, Booth came up with another steal, took it the distance and converted the transition lay-up for a 9-point lead, 31-22, with 3:55 left in the opening half.

UC responded with five straight, including a three-pointer by Wombles, to get back within four.  Bre Shaw’s lay-up at the 1:07 mark sent the Lady Colonels to the locker room with a 6-point margin, 35-29.

Jasmine Stovall’s two lay-ups and a long jumper from Carpenter turned a 7-point lead into a 13-point margin, 46-33, with 16:08 left in the game.  However, the Patriots went on a 24-8 run to take a three-point lead, 57-54, with 4:38 remaining in regulation.

A pair of free throws from Wombles with 16 seconds on the clock kept the UC margin at three, 62-59.  After an EKU timeout with eight ticks left, Coles found the bottom of the bucket as the horn sounded.

Eastern was out-rebounded 41-36 and missed 10 free throws.  However, the team shot 43 percent from the field and only turned the ball over 12 times.

The Lady Colonels will begin the 2011-12 regular season next Saturday at Xavier.  Tip-off in Cincinnati is scheduled for 2 p.m.
