RICHMOND, Ky. – It will be a Big South weekend for the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, as the Colonels travel to play at UNC Asheville on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before returning home to host Gardner-Webb on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at EKU Soccer Field.
It is EKU’s first-ever meeting with both schools.
EKU (1-3) defeated regionally-ranked Miami (Ohio), 2-1, in overtime on Sunday at home. Miami came into the game ranked No. 10 in the Great Lakes Region by the NSCAA following impressive shutout wins over IUPUI and defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Morehead State to open the season.
Two Colonels were honored by the OVC following EKU’s first-ever win over the RedHawks. Freshman
Devon Saini was named the OVC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals (the latter the game-winner four minutes into overtime) against Miami, and sophomore
Lauren Fant was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week after going the distance in three matches last week and serving up a perfect ball to Saini in overtime for the game-winning assist against Miami.
Freshman Annie Wickett has now made three consecutive starts in goal for the Colonels and made six saves in Sunday’s win over the RedHawks.
UNC Asheville (0-2) is winless this season and recently fell to OVC school Tennessee Tech, 4-1. Amanda Dailor and Kaitlyn Eckert have each scored a goal for the Bulldogs so far this year.
Gardner-Webb (1-0-1) defeated South Carolina Upstate, 3-0, to begin the year before tying Chattanooga, 3-3, on Sunday. The Runnin’ Bulldogs, who are led by Dawn Rollyson’s two goals, will visit Morehead State on Friday night before travelling to Richmond for Sunday’s game.
