Colonels Add Infielder Luke Wurzelbacher to 2012 Signing Class

Luke Wurzelbacher
RICHMOND, Ky. – Luke Wurzelbacher, a senior infielder from Stephen T. Badin High School in Hamilton, Ohio, has signed to play baseball at Eastern Kentucky University in the spring of 2013, head coach Jason Stein announced on Tuesday.

Wurzelbacher is currently batting .286 for the Rams with 30 runs scored, 14 RBI and 15 stolen bases.

“We are very excited to have Luke join our Colonel baseball family,” Stein said. “Luke is an outstanding athlete who can play any spot on the infield. By adding Luke, we probably do not have to worry about signing infielders for the next couple of years.”

The 6-3, 185-pound Wurzelbacher was a two-sport standout during his career at Badin High. As a baseball player under head coach Brion Treadway, he was named second team All-Greater Catholic League Central in 2010 and 2011. As a football player, he did it all for the Rams, playing quarterback, safety and punter en route to being named first team All-GCL Central, the GCL Central All-Purpose Player of the Year and the GCL Central Punter of the Year in 2011.

“Luke’s best baseball days are ahead of him because of his size and strength,” Stein added.

Wurzelbacher joins Kenneth Hostrander (infielder, Maine, N.Y.), Matt Lynch (right-handed pitcher, Chicago, Ill.), Eric Nerl (right-handed pitcher, Cincinnati, Ohio), Kyle Nowlin (outfielder, Harrison, Ohio), Trey Salisbury (right-handed pitcher, Cannonsburg, Ky.), Doug Teegarden (infielder, Florence, Ky.) and Trace Vorbek (right-handed pitcher / utility player, Corbin, Ky.) in EKU’s 2012 recruiting class.

The Colonel baseball team won a school-record 19 conference games this season and earned a share of its first Ohio Valley Conference regular season title since 2000.
