RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team fell to Ohio Valley Conference foe Belmont, 2-1, in overtime on Friday afternoon in the Colonels' regular season home finale at EKU Soccer Field.
EKU had won two consecutive games coming into Friday's matchup. The loss drops the Colonels to 4-11-2 (3-4-1 OVC) on the season. Belmont improves to 5-8-2 (3-4-1 OVC).
EKU led Belmont at halftime thanks to a goal by freshman
Cassie Smith in the 31st minute off an assist from senior
Nikki Donnelly. The goal was Smith's team-leading fifth of the season and the assist was Donnelly's team-best fourth of the season.
Belmont got the equalizer five minutes into the second half, though, as Katie Proud got behind sophomore goalkeeper
Erika Wolfer and found an open net, tapping it in to make it 1-1.
The game remain knotted through regulation, and six minutes into overtime Sydney Omweg rebounded a shot by Meredith Martin and scored to give the Bruins a key conference victory entering the homestretch of the season.
"Belmont wanted to win that game more than we did," head coach
Melissa Barnes said. "We have to play with the intensity and the urgency that we showed last weekend in order to win games in this league. The result of this game makes Sunday a must-win game."
Belmont outshot EKU in the game, 14-7; however, Donnelly led all players on the afternoon with four shots, two of which were on goal.
Corner kicks were even between the two teams, 4-4.
EKU defenders
Lauren Fant,
Paige Larkin and
Mikayla Brillon all went the distance in the overtime game, as did midfielder
Brittany Nomady.
Wolfer played all 96 minutes of the game, as well, and made three saves.
EKU will now travel to Tennessee Tech on Sunday. First touch between the two teams is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
