RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's tennis team defeated visiting Kennesaw State, 5-2, on Saturday at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
KSU (6-2) entered Saturday riding a six-match winning streak, including wins over upper-tier Ohio Valley Conference squads Belmont and Jacksonville State.
The Owls started the day strong by winning the doubles point. EKU's
Alex Álvaro and
Diego Asis teamed up to win their match, 6-3, but Kennesaw State claimed the next two doubles matches.
The Colonels (9-7) regrouped, though, and dominated singles play.
Junior
Sebastian Mueller won (6-1, 6-3) at No. 3, followed by wins by sophomore
Ramon van Flymen (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 and freshman
Guillem Sanchis (6-3, 6-2) at No. 4. Alvaro fell to KSU's Simon Pritchard (6-4, 6-4) at No. 1; however, junior
Diogo Soares sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Senior
Florian Graskamp also won, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 6.
"After losing doubles, we had our backs against the wall," head coach
Rob Oertel said. "But we bounced back and did a good job defending our home court."
Eastern has now won eight of its last nine matches. The Colonels return to action March 13 versus Radford and West Florida in Pensacola, Florida.
