NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 1 seed Tennessee Tech University edged the defending Ohio Valley Conference champion, Eastern Kentucky University, 4-3, in Sunday's men's tennis championship match at the Centennial Sportsplex.
The Colonels rolled to a 1-0 lead after taking both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 score. Senior
Alex Álvaro and junior
Sebastian Mueller picked up the win at the one spot, while sophomore Ramon Van Flymen and junior
Diogo Soares won at the No. 2 spot in similar fashion.
The Golden Eagles evened the score with a win at No. 1 singles, before Álvaro's win at No. 2 put EKU back in front. Tech was able to hold off the Colonels at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to take a 3-2 lead.
Florian Graskamp's resiliency helped the senior to a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 to tie the score at three, as the match came down to the wire.
Tied at three, the Golden Eagles claimed the conference crown with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles. Tech won the regular season championship to earn the tournament's No. 1 seed.
The Colonels' four OVC Tournament titles are the most among any team in the league. The Golden Eagles and Colonels both earned a share of the 2015 regular season title before EKU won last year's tournament.
