HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – As a team, Eastern Kentucky has hit 12 home runs and batted .310 in its last four games. The Colonels take those hot bats up the road when they travel north to take on in-state rival Northern Kentucky University Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Colonels (24-21, 14-7 OVC) are coming off a weekend series against Jacksonville State where they took two of three. The Norse (12-29, 7-14 Horizon) are coming off a weekend series against Oakland University where they won two-of-three against the Golden Grizzlies.
EKU's offense is led by junior's
Alex Holderbach and
Ryland Kerr. Holderbach is batting a team-high .371, with 10 doubles, two triples, and a team-high 15 home runs and 65 RBIs. He leads the country in RBIs and is eighth in home runs. Holderbach was chosen as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday. He hit .471 with eight runs, six home runs, 12 RBIs and five walks in four games last week. That included a new program record four home runs in a victory at Xavier on Wednesday.
Kerr is hitting at a .328 clip to go along with a team-high 17 doubles, two triples, four home runs, and 27 RBIs. He is fourth in the OVC and 21st nationally in doubles.
Cornell Nixon continues to cause problems on the base paths as he ranks fourth in the country in stolen bases per game and 15th in the nation in runs scored per game.
The Colonel offense has been on a tear this year as they rank first in the OVC and 12th in the country in stolen bases and third in the conference and 10th in the country in runs scored. Eastern also ranks third in the league and 11th nationally in hits along with fourth in the conference and 28th nationally in doubles.
NKU's offense is led by Will Haueter and Jake Richmond. Haueter is hitting at a .358 clip with 15 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, and 32 RBIs. Richmond has a .286 batting-average with six doubles, nine home runs, and 23 RBIs.
Kaven Brown will get the nod for the Colonels on Tuesday. He is 3-2 on the year with 5.98 ERA with 33 strikeouts over 40 and two-thirds innings pitched. He will look for his third quality start on the year. He will face off against senior right-hander Pat Kelley. Kelley is 0-3 on the year while striking out 20 batters over 20 and two-thirds innings pitched.
Eastern Kentucky returns home this weekend when the Colonels welcome conference rival Murray State for a three-game series starting Friday. First pitch at Earle Combs Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
