JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eastern Kentucky University student-athletes Samuel Abascal and Remi Schyns competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA East Region Track & Field Preliminaries on Friday night at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida's campus.

Facing the best runners east of the Mississippi River, both Colonels competed admirably. Abascal, a junior, finished eighth in his heat and 27^th out of the field of 48 with a time of 9:02.7.

Schyns, only a freshman, placed 10^th in his heat and 31^st overall with a time of 9:07.3.

The top 12 finishers from the race advanced to NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.

Abascal wraps up his season as the OVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and OVC steeplechase champion. His steeplechase time of 8:42.5, which he ran in March, put him at No. 5 on EKU's all-time list in that event. He also won two silvers (mile, distance medley relay) and one bronze (3,000 meters) at the OVC Indoor Championships back in February.

Schyns was voted the OVC Outdoor Freshman of the Year earlier this month. He took silver in the steeplechase at the OVC Championships, losing only to Abascal. The native of Liege, Belgium qualified for regionals by running 8:59.3 at Louisville in late April.
