RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team added Texas State transfer
Jayla Johnson, head coach
Samantha Williams announced on Monday.
Johnson, a 6-foot-2 center from Dallas, Texas, has played for the Bobcats the last three years.
As a junior, Johnson appeared in 29 of the teams 30 games, while averaging 7.2 points per game on 45 percent shooting from the field. Johnson scored a season-high 18 points, on 9-for-11 shooting, and grabbed four rebounds in the team's 67-59 win over Alcorn State. Johnson scored double-digits in eight games.
During her sophomore campaign, she averaged eight points and 4.3 rebounds in just 18.6 minutes per contest. She posted a career-best 23 points against Oral Robert on Nov. 24, 2018.
"I'm really excited about adding a player of Jayla's caliber to our EKU family. Without a doubt she will make an immediate impact with her versatility and athleticism," Williams said. "Not only is it important to Jayla to get her degree but she wants to have a basketball career after college. With our staff's experience, we are a perfect match to help her reach her goals. The sky's the limit for Jayla."
Johnson played at Lincoln High School as a senior where she helped her team to a 27-7 record. She averaged 15.4 points per game, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 steals a contest and earned all-district honors. Before her time at Lincoln High School, Johnson played at powerhouse Duncanville High School where the finished ranked No. 2 nationally in the final 2016 USA Today Super 25.
