JONESBORO, Ark. – Georgetown, Kentucky native
Rylea Marcum broke the program single round record with a first round 64 (-8) and Eastern Kentucky broke the program 54-hole team mark in winning the Lady Red Wolves Classic hosted by Arkansas State University on Monday and Tuesday.
Â
Marcum's opening round score beat the previous program record of 65 set by Elsa Moberly at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 27, 2017.
"One of my biggest goals coming into college golf was to win a few invitationals.  Little did I know that I had the ability to break the school record," Marcum said. "I felt really comfortable out on the golf course and I couldn't have done it without the support from my team, coaches, and family. I am also super proud of the team for winning our second tournament of the fall season."
Â
For the second time this season, EKU broke the program record for 54-hole tournament score with a total of 858, three shots better than the 861 record set in the season opener in September at the Redbird Invitational.
Â
"I can't say enough about this team and their performance this week," head coach
Mandy Moore said.  "To have three rounds under par as a team is tough to do and we had a complete team effort to get it done today. A team win and individual 1-2 is a great day.  I'm very proud of this team and how they continue to push each other." Â
Â
The Colonels won the 16-team event by nine strokes over second place South Alabama (867). Eastern Kentucky carded rounds of 286 (-2), 287 (-1) and 285 (-3).
Â
Marcum captured individual medalist honors with an 11-under total of 205. She followed her record-breaking 64 with a second round 2-under 70 and a final round 1-under 71. Marcum's first round included eight birdies and 10 pars.
Â
"Rylea was so impressive the entire tournament," said Moore. Â "Her 10-under total on day one was as good as it gets. Â She has always been a great ball striker, but she took her mental game to the next level this week."
Â
Teammate
Ragnhildur Kristinsdottir finished second, three shots back. Kristinsdottir carded rounds of 4-under 68, even-par 72 and another 4-under 68 for a total of 208 (-8).
Â
Marcum and Krstinsdottir's totals are the second and third lowest in program history. Only Kristinsdottir's 204 two weeks ago at the Johnie Imes Invitational is lower.
Â
The two-day event was contested at the par 72, 6,164-yard Sage Meadows Country Club.
Â
The field also included Southern Mississippi (880), Lipscomb (883), Austin Peay (885), Memphis (888), Troy (898), UT Arlington (903) and Southern Illinois (916).
Â
Elisa Orduna Shackleton (222) tied for 20th overall.Â
Carlee Shoemaker (228) finished strong with rounds of even-par 72 and 1-over 73, and tied for 45th.Â
Vilma Efraimsson (230) tied for 55th, highlighted by a second round 1-over 73.
Â
Playing as an individual,
Maddie Hensley (235) tied for 71st.
Â
EKU will play at the Terrier Intercollegiate on Oct. 25-26. The event, hosted by Wofford College, will be played at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
