BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University's
Laura Taborda has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Thursday.
Â
Taborda broke the EKU women's 3,000-meter steeplechase record last Friday at Ole Miss, clocking a time of 10:22.08. That time clipped
Ciara Scott's previous school record of 10:22.2 set in 2018.
Â
It is the fastest women's steeplechase time in the OVC this season by 12 seconds, and it currently ranks Taborda No. 23 in the NCAA East Region.
Â
Taborda – a redshirt freshman from Covilha, Portugal – won the OVC country title in March, becoming only the fourth EKU woman ever to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships as an individual.
Â
She will race in the steeplechase again on Friday night at the
Rick Erdmann Twilight in Richmond.
