BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Following a record-breaking weekend, Eastern Kentucky University's
Ahmed Jaziri and
Kayla Smith have been named the Ohio Valley Conference Male and Female Track Athletes of the Week.
Â
Jaziri – a junior from Rades, Tunisia – unleashed a massive kick on the bell lap to win the loaded men's 3,000-meter steeplechase Olympic race at the Trials of Miles qualifier in Kansas City on Saturday night. His winning time of 8:32.9 set a new EKU record in the event and is currently the fastest time in the NCAA.
Â
Smith broke EKU's 38-year-old record in the women's 100-meter dash on Friday at the UNF Invite in Jacksonville, Florida. Her time of 11.53 edged the previous school record of 11.56, held by Rose Gilmore since 1983, and it is currently the No. 1 time in the conference.
Â
The Lincolnton, North Carolina native also anchored EKU's 4x100 meter relay, which ran a time of 45.69. That is the third-fastest time in EKU history and the fastest in more than 28 years. It currently ranks No. 2 in the OVC.
Â
Smith shared this week's honor with Austin Peay sprinter Kenisha Phillips.
Â
This is the first career OVC Track Athlete of the Week honor for both Jaziri and Smith.
Â
The Colonels will compete at the OVC Outdoor Championships May 13-15 in Charleston, Illinois.
