EUGENE, Ore. – Eastern Kentucky University junior Ahmed Jaziri will race for a national title on Friday.

Jaziri automatically advanced to the finals of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday night at Hayward Field, finishing fifth in his heat with a time of 8:37.8.

The top five finishers from both heats, plus the next two fastest times, advanced to Friday's final.

The big 'Q' did not come easy. Jaziri fought through a driving rain the entire race, and was tripped up on the final water jump with less than 200 meters left; however, he recovered and was able to grab the 12^th and final spot into the final.

It is the sixth time in the last seven years EKU has sent a man to the NCAA steeplechase finals. Ole Hesslebjerg (bronze in 2014 and 2015) and Jamaine Coleman (silver in 2018) both medaled.

The steeplechase finals will air on ESPN2 on Friday night at 8:24 p.m. ET.
