2022 All-Conference Team & Postseason Awards
ATLANTA, Ga. – Three Colonels earned ASUN First Team All-Conference recognition.
Will Brian was the first team pick at relief pitcher.
Will King was the first team catcher selection.
Kendal Ewell was chosen as one of three first team outfielders.
Brian was a preseason All-American and is on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List. He is second in the NCAA in saves (14), breaking EKU's single season record of 12. The redshirt junior has only allowed seven runs and 13 hits all season. He is first in the ASUN in appearances and third in strikeouts among pitchers who have not started a game. The Brandenburg, Kentucky native made four appearances against RPI top-100 teams, including No. 1 Tennessee, without allowing a hit or a run and striking out nine in four and two-thirds innings. For the season, Brian went 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 37 and one-third innings pitched.
King is sixth in the ASUN in RBIs (57), sixth in doubles (18), 15th in home runs (10), 18th in slugging (.527), 26th in hits (60) and 39th in walks (23). He is the fourth toughest player in conference to strike out. The sophomore from New York, New York was on the Buster Posey Award Watch List. Behind the plate, he made only two errors and caught 25.6 percent of stolen base attempts. King batted .293 this season with 27 runs scored and a .379 on-base percentage.
In ASUN games only, Ewell hit .451 with 11 home runs, 35 RBIs, 37 runs, a .795 slugging percentage and a .547 on base percentage. In ASUN only contests, he led the league in batting average, hits, and on-base percentage, was second in slugging, third in runs, fifth in home runs, sixth in RBIs, 10th in doubles, 12th in steals and 14th in walks. In all games, Ewell was third in the ASUN in average (.386), third in slugging (.653), third in on-base percentage (.506), fifth in hits (78), sixth in runs (55), seventh in home runs (14), ninth in walks (37) and 14th in RBIs (50). The sophomore from Calumet City, Illinois ranked 12th in NCAA in on-base percentage, 31st in average, 67th in slugging and 71st in RBIs.
After hitting .722 with five home runs, 10 RBIs and a 1.611 slugging percentage in four games during the week of April 18-24, Ewell was picked as the national player of the week by multiple organizations. He received the Golden Spikes Award Performance of the Week specifically for his 5-for-5 game with three home runs, six RBIs and four runs against North Alabama. D1Baseball.com ranked Ewell as the No. 1 prospect in the ASUN for the 2022 Draft. He was a two-time ASUN Player of the Week selection.
