2023 ASUN Conference Baseball Preseason Honors & Awards

ATLANTA, Ga. –
Catcher Will King was selected by league coaches to the 2023 ASUN Baseball Preseason All-Conference Team.

King, a 5-foot-9, 195-pound junior, was a First Team All-ASUN Conference pick in 2022 and earned a spot on the ASUN All-Tournament Team.  He was also on the watch list for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award.

In a preseason poll of league head coaches, EKU was picked to finish fifth during the 2023 season.  Liberty is the preseason favorite, followed by Kennesaw State, Florida Gulf Coast and Lipscomb.

Eastern Kentucky University finished the 2022 season 38-20, champions of the ASUN Conference West Division and tied for the best conference record in the ASUN.  It was the most wins for a Colonel team since the 1990 squad won 42 games.  EKU won all three of its games in pool play to earn a spot in the ASUN Tournament final four.

King batted .313 with 19 doubles, 11 home runs, 60 RBIs and 31 runs last season.  He tied for seventh in the ASUN in RBIs, was sixth in doubles, 13th in slugging, tied for 15th in home runs, tied for 18th in hits (68) and was 21st in average.

The New York, New York native ranked 82nd in the country in doubles.  He was the only catcher to earn a spot on the ASUN All-Tournament team after hitting .667 with four runs, a double, a home run, three RBIs, eight hits in 12 at bats and a 1.000 slugging percentage.  He hit .392 with nine doubles, three home runs, 17 RBIs and nine runs in his final 17 games of the season.

On March 13, King drove in a season-high five runs after going 2-for-5 with two home runs against Bowling Green.  He finished 3-for-5 with an RBI against No. 7 Louisville on May 17.  King registered a season-high four hits in four at bats, with a double, a home run, three runs scored and an RBI against No. 1 seed Liberty in the ASUN Tournament semifinals on May 27.

In December, Collegiate Baseball ranked EKU 46th in its Fabulous 50 NCAA Division I Pre-Season Poll presented by Big League Chew.  The Colonels were the highest ranked ASUN team in the top-50 and were ranked higher than such programs as South Carolina (47), Alabama (49) and BYU (50).

Eastern Kentucky University will open the 2023 season on Feb. 17 against Alabama-Birmingham in Mobile, Alabama.
