RICHMOND, Ky. - EKU Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cory Erdmann added Dale Cowper to the Colonels' coaching staff as an Assistant Coach. Cowper will develop and lead the men's and women's throws group at EKU, as well as assisting with other aspects of the program.

"We couldn't be more thrilled that Coach Cowper decided to join our staff and program.  Coach Cowper is one of the premier throws coaches in the NCAA who has recruited and developed numerous high level athletes including Conference Champions, NCAA All-Americans and NCAA Champions.  We are fortunate to add someone of Coach Cowper's caliber, who shares the vision we have for our program and will work tirelessly to develop student-athletes and to provide them with an outstanding experience," said Erdmann.

In the past, the EKU program hasn't carried a lot of throwers.  But according to Erdmann, "As my staff and I evaluated the changing dynamic within our conference, it became apparent that we can continue to move our program forward both at the ASUN and NCAA level by developing a strong throws program.  I am confident Coach Cowper can help us do that at EKU, and I know he is excited to get to work and to help build something special."

On making the move to Richmond, Cowper added, "My family and I are excited to make the move to Richmond.  Coach Erdmann has a clear vision for EKU Track and Field moving forward and I'm excited to get to work building a competitive throws program on campus."

Coach Cowper comes to EKU after spending seventeen (17) years at the University of Louisville, including the last ten (10) as Director of the Track and Field and Cross Country programs.  This past season, the Cardinal men posted their best finish in ACC history with a third-place finish at the 2023 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  The Louisville men also posted their best ever indoor track finish in the ACC with a fourth-place finish at the 2023 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships.  In 2021-2022, the Cardinal women had their first ever NCAA Outdoor National Champion and finished 25th in the NCAA as a team.

As an athlete at Western Michigan, Coach Cowper was a four-time qualifier to the NCAA Championships.  He earned All-America honors in the weight throw in 2001 and the hammer throw in 2002. Cowper posted two World Athletics top 20 rankings in the weight throw.

Cowper and his wife Constance have two sons, Zachary and Logan.  They plan to reside in Richmond.
