Greg Todd Signs Two-Year Contract Extension

RICHMOND, Ky.  –  Eastern Kentucky University and head women's basketball coach Greg Todd have agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2027-28 season, announced on Thursday afternoon by the university.

Todd is entering his fourth season as the head women's basketball coach at the start of the 2024-25 season in November.

Last year, Todd led the Colonels to a 22-12 overall record with an appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference semifinals and an at-large bid in the 2024 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), the program's first national postseason tournament since 2013. The program recorded a NCAA-high NET ranking of No. 162 in the regular season, which is 134 spots higher than before he took the helm in 2020. EKU's 22 wins marked the first 20-win season since 2005.

Todd enters the 2024-25 season with a 55-42 (.567) record at EKU. He recently surpassed 700 career wins, 300 NCAA DI wins, and became the fastest coach to 50 wins in program history.

"EKU Women's Basketball has experienced a remarkable revitalization under Coach Todd's leadership, achieving multiple winning seasons and significant strides in postseason play," said EKU President David McFaddin. "His ability to recruit and develop top talent has led to numerous conference honors and academic excellence for student-athletes. Coach Todd has truly transformed our Women's Basketball program, and we're excited to see continued success under his leadership."

Since Todd's arrival in 2021, the Berea, Kentucky native has improved the team by 13 wins and has seen an increase in win total in all three of his seasons with the program. Todd has had two student-athletes combine for five all-conference selections, including Antwainette Walker who was a two-time First Team All-ASUN pick and was a finalist for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award and Dawn Staley Award, recognizing the top guards across women's college basketball.

"I am very thankful for Eastern Kentucky University and President David McFaddin's continued trust in the direction of our women's basketball program," said Todd. "Our program has been one of the most consistent and electric teams in Atlantic Sun women's basketball, and I look forward to continuing to elevate the program to greater heights in the seasons to come. I am grateful for the community support that continues to develop here in Richmond, we have an unbelievably experienced staff that makes my life so much easier on and off the court. President McFaddin has been very supportive in continuing to build athletics here at EKU. It is truly my dream job to be a Colonel."

Last season, EKU was picked to finish third in the ASUN Conference and held true in the final tally, as the program advanced to the semifinals for the first time as a member in the league. The Colonels defeated 3-seed Lipscomb in the opening round by a wide 99-68 gap which sparked a berth in the WNIT for the first time since 2002. Todd aided and developed the rise of Walker, who departed EKU with over 1,100 points and cemented herself as one of the best players in program history in just two short seasons.  Walker declared for the 2024 WNBA Draft at the conclusion of the season.

In 2022-23, EKU ended with a 18-14 mark and 11-7 record in ASUN play. The Colonels were top three in the league in over eight offensive categories, including 76.4 points per game which was top 25 in the country. EKU had 20-point wins over Appalachian State, Army West Point, and Central Arkansas during the regular season. Transfer guard Danielle Rainey was one of two players in the league to ink a professional contract overseas, she is currently playing for ZKK Spartak in Serbia's top league averaging just under 15.0 points per game.

He was named the 2023 Herald-Leader Kentucky Women's Coach of the Year, the first coach to be named to the superlative in program history.

In his first year at the helm in 2021-22, Todd ended the season with a 15-16 mark after guiding the team from a transition from the Ohio Valley Conference to the ASUN and improved the program by six wins from a season prior. The Colonels were top 60 nationally in steals and blocks per game.

Todd, who is hailed as "The Transfer Coach" across basketball spaces, has successfully signed 15 players out of the portal in the new era of college basketball. All 15 of those players have gone on to have the best season of their collegiate careers under Todd despite coming from some of the top programs in the country like Florida, Marquette, and Ohio State.

Outside of X's and O's, EKU women's basketball has improved its total revenue by 230 percent and has seen a 168 percent increase in season ticket sales. EKU has had four home games with over 1,100 fans and had a high of 2,136 supporters for a 30-point win over Miami (Ohio) last season.

EKU has successfully partnered with the Kay Yow Foundation and Nike to put on two #PlayForKay games, honoring and recognizing local breast cancer survivors with a special game theme.

Last season, over 34,400 fans poured in arenas all over the country to watch the Colonels in their program-leading 34-game schedule. Since 2021, Todd and the women's basketball program have enhanced the student-athlete experience with once-in-a-lifetime trips to Ireland, Alaska, Bahamas, New York City, and Boston for away competition.

Todd, who is no stranger to the area, has spent his entire 32-year coaching career inside the Commonwealth and has checked off promises to rejuvenate the fan base back into women's basketball.
