JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball senior forward
Joseana Vaz was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Week after averaging 22.5 points per game last week, the league office announced Monday.
The honor marks Vaz's fourth ASUN weekly award of the season, including three Newcomer of the Week selections and an ASUN Player of the Week nod last month on Jan. 5.
A native of Praia, Cape Verde, Vaz averaged 22.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the floor in wins over regional rivals Lipscomb and Austin Peay.
With her performances, Vaz has taken the outright team lead in scoring at 13.7 points per game this season and has scored in double figures in 19 contests during her EKU career.
In a 61-55 road win at Lipscomb last Thursday, Vaz totaled 12 points, three rebounds, and one steal.
Vaz followed with a career-best performance in a 67-60 home win over Austin Peay on Saturday, pouring in a career-high 33 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including a 4-for-8 effort from beyond the arc.
She added six rebounds, two steals, and one block as EKU moved to 21-4 overall and a perfect 12-0 mark in ASUN play. Vaz's performance was rated among the nation's top 15 individual performances on Feb. 7, according to SkimMilkey and CBB Players on X.
Vaz's 33-point outing marked the 50th time in program history an EKU player has scored 30 or more points in a single game and tied for the 17th-most points in a game in school history. It was also the program's first 30-point performance since Nov. 15, 2023.
Vaz and the first-place Colonels return to action Thursday, Feb. 12, hosting Central Arkansas inside Baptist Health Arena at 6:30 p.m. ET. Fans can find tickets starting at just $5 at the door or
