Murray, Ky. - Murray State racked up 17 hits on Sunday to defeat the Eastern Kentucky baseball team 12-1 and complete the team's three-game sweep. The Colonels (9-15, 3-5 OVC) tallied four hits in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but managed just three more the rest of the day.
Murray junior West Harris (4-2) threw a solid 7.0 innings, allowing six hits (four in the first) and just one run to pick up the victory. EKU freshman Blake Anderson was handed his first defeat of the season after surrendering seven runs in 4.0 innings of work.
Senior Bryan Stevenson scored the Colonels only run of the game in the first inning. Stevenson reached base with a two-out single, following a double play by the Murray defense, and moved up off a single by junior Chris O'Dell. A RBI base knock by senior Will Whisenant scored Stevenson, but would mark EKU's only run production of the afternoon.
The 'Breds plated three runs in the bottom of the first, which marked their first of a trio of three-run innings in the game. Alex Stewart registered a game-high four hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in four runs to lead the Thoroughbreds. Dustin Hennigar and Tyler Pittman added two RBI a piece, with Pittman adding a home run for Murray.
O'Dell accounted for two of the team's six hits in the loss. Sophomore Tony Wells went 0-for-3 at the plate to see his hit streak snapped at 16 games, while junior Brett Bolger went 1-for-3 with a double and extended his hit streak to 15 games.
Eastern hits the road for a pair of midweek non-conference games against Xavier (April 12) and Western Kentucky (April 13) before returning to Turkey Hughes Field to host Jacksonville State next weekend (April 16-17).
