Richmond, Ky. – Having lost seven games to unplayable weather conditions, the Eastern Kentucky baseball team (12-21) added a doubleheader with Kentucky State on Thursday afternoon. The Colonels weren't very hospitable, however, taking 12-0 and 18-0 shutout victories from the visiting Thorobreds (6-15).
EKU returns to action this weekend when it heads to Birmingham, Ala., for a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference series with Samford.
EKU 12, Kentucky State 0Engle (2-3) scattered two hits and threw a season-high eight strikeouts to record the first shutout by an EKU pitcher this season. The Colonels needed just six hits to take a 12-0 victory in the five-inning contest, thanks to the 11 free passes they received from the Kentucky State pitching staff (seven walks, four batters hit by pitch).
EKU went on top 2-0 in the first as senior Derrick Bussell scored the first of his three runs on the afternoon off an error by KSU's second baseman. Junior Chris O'Dell made it a 2-0 game when his single to left plated sophomore Tony Wells. The Colonels tacked on four more runs in the second, with a RBI double from Bussell and a run-scoring single from Stevenson doing the majority of the damage.
Stevenson struck again in the third, following a two-run single from senior Will Whisenant with a two-run homer to right center (his fourth of the year). Stevenson's blast capped off a six-run frame for EKU, which pushed the team's lead to 12-0. The senior outfielder led the squad with three RBI and two stolen bases, while tying Whisenant with a team-high two hits.
Engle fanned eight Thorobreds, including three in the second inning, to pick up his second victory of the year.
EKU 18, Kentucky State 0A nine-run first inning gave the Colonels more than enough cushion in the second contest, as EKU rode 13 hits and a solid start from sophomore Casey Howard to an 18-0 victory. Howard went 6.0 innings and recorded his first career complete-game shutout after striking out a career-best seven batters. Junior Sean Ryan got the start at catcher for the Colonels and responded with a 3-for-4 effort and a game-high four runs batted in.
Ryan got EKU going in the first with a triple to right and scored the team's first run following a base knock from Stevenson. Wells came to the plate moments later and ripped a three-run homer over the right field fence (his third of the year) to give Eastern a 4-0 lead. The Colonels tacked on five more runs in the frame, thanks to a RBI single by freshman Aaron Landis, an RBI double from Bolger and a two-run single by Ryan.
Eastern set the stage for another big inning in the bottom of the fourth by leading off the frame with three-consecutive singles. Landis drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 10-0 game, then freshman Clint Seymour plated the second run with a RBI groundout. Up 11-0, freshman Lucas Waters tripled to right center to score Landis and Seymour. Ryan capped off the Colonels' five-run inning with a sacrifice fly to right to bring EKU's lead to 14-0.
With the game already well in hand, the Colonels tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped off by a RBI single from Stevenson, to go ahead 18-0. Howard (1-) closed out Kentucky State in the sixth to finish off EKU's second shutout of the season and pick up his first win of the year. Wells and Waters both added three RBI for Eastern, while Stevenson and Landis chipped in two RBI a piece to the team's cause.
