Colonels Rally For 4-3 Win Over Wright State

Fairborn, Ohio – The Eastern Kentucky baseball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth to overcome a 3-1 deficit and take a 4-3 victory at Wright State on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Tony Wells capped off Eastern's comeback with a two-run double in the eighth to lead the Colonels (16-21) to their sixth-straight win.

Wright State (18-17) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third compliments of a RBI double from Brendan Rubenstein and a run-scoring triple by Brian Shoup. EKU cut its deficit to a single run in the fourth when junior Chris O'Dell plated senior Bryan Stevenson with a RBI single to right.

WSU starting pitcher Ross Vagedes left the game after the fifth, having held the Colonels to one run and four hits during his stint. Relief pitchers Chris Coleman and Crawford kept the EKU offense bottled up for the next two innings, but the Colonels came to life in the eighth off Nate Stevens.

Trailing 3-1, after a sixth-inning solo homer by Wright State's Bryan Vickers, Stevenson sparked the EKU comeback with a two-out double. After taking third on a wild pitch, Stevenson came around to score off a RBI single from senior Will Whisenant. O'Dell followed with his second hit of the day, setting the stage for Wells' game-winning two-run double.

Freshman Blake Anderson (4-2) got the win for the Colonels after blanking the Raiders in the seventh and eighth innings. Anderson allowed just one hit and struck out three batters to pick up his fourth victory of the year. Junior Greg Harper took the mound in the bottom of the ninth and recorded his second save of the year by retiring the Raiders in order.

Eastern racked up seven hits in the win, led by two a piece from Stevenson, Wells and O'Dell. Senior pitcher Eric Anthrop started the game for EKU and took a no decision after going 6.0 innings with six hits and three runs allowed.

The Colonels return to action this weekend when they welcome Southeast Missouri to Turkey Hughes Field for a three-game conference series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
