BRADENTON, Fla. - Sophomore Joe Oliver connected on a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Eastern Kentucky to a 7-6 win over Indiana Thursday morning. With the win, the Colonels even their record at 7-7 while the Hoosiers fall to 3-9.
The score was tied at four in the top of the eighth when Indiana took the lead on a two-out, two-run double by Ben Greenspan. Eastern avoided further trouble when reliever David Owens induced a grounder to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, junior Charlie Yarbrough reached base after getting hit by a pitch. A bunt single by Sean Ryan then put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt and strike out, Oliver came to the plate and delivered a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence.
Junior Michael Mulholland pitched a perfect ninth to notch the save. Owens went two innings to earn the win. Senior Scott Goetz logged the opening six innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run.
Yarbrough, Ryan and designated hitter Aaron Barrows each finished with a pair of hits in the win.
Eastern Kentucky is right back in action tomorrow in Florida with a double-header against Northern Iowa. The first game is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
