Friedrich Tosses No-Hitter, Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Freshman lefthander Christian Friedrich threw a seven-inning no-hitter to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Morehead State in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Allen Field in Morehead. The Eagles won the opener 12-2.

Friedrich, now 4-0 in his brief collegiate career, hit one batter and issued one walk. He faced only two batters over the minimum and struck out 10.

Friedrich's gem spoiled an outstanding performance by MSU junior righthander Henry Mabee (1-4) who also struck out 10.

Eastern picked up the lone run of the game in the second inning on an RBI double from senior Keith Bolger, scoring first baseman Charlie Yarbrough, who had reached on an error.

Morehead State scored four runs in the first inning of game one and was never threatened. Senior righthander Shane Lucci (3-4) still had a
shutout going with only an out remaining in the game before surrendering two runs. Colonel starter Scott Goetz (0-2) took the loss.

The Eagles pounded out 14 hits and got home runs from catcher Donald Cheney, second baseman Chris McCaslin and first baseman Paul Rhodes.Cheney had three runs batted in and McCaslin and third baseman Ryan Kinder had two RBI each.

The Friedrich no-hitter is the second of the week at Eastern Kentucky as Kelsey Anderson led the EKU softball team to a 7-0 victory with no-hitter against Morehead State on Wednesday.

MSU is now 9-13 overall, 1-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. EKU is 11-9 overall, 1-1 in the league.

The Colonels travel to face Louisville in their next game Wednesday, March 29 at 6 p.m.
