Hash, Wells Lead Baseball Past Akron, 9-1

Junior Tony Wells
RICHMOND, Ky. – Freshman Eric Hash pitched six innings, allowing only one run and junior Tony Wells went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team past the Akron Zips, 9-1, today at Turkey Hughes Field. The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The Colonels (3-3) struck early, putting two runs on the board in the first. Sophomore Lucas Waters singled to begin the inning, stole second and then scored on a single from senior Brett Bolger. Bolger moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored one out later on an RBI groundout from Wells.

Freshman Matt Davis doubled to left to leadoff the Eastern second, moved to third on a Joe Oliver sacrifice bunt and then came around to score on a fielder's choice.

Hash allowed only three base runners through the first five innings, before Scott Gunn lined a one-out homer over the fence in right to cut the Colonel lead to 4-1.

Junior Michael Mulholland relieved Hash to begin the seventh and loaded the bases with one out on a double and two walks. But he then induced Ryne Romick into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to get out of the jam.

The Colonels got an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single from pinch hitter Aaron Landis and put the game away with four runs in the eighth.

Tom Farmer took the loss for the Zips, allowing five runs and eight hits in seven innings.
